តើពាក្យ “ម្ហូប” និង “អាហារ” មានភាពខុសគ្នាយ៉ាងដូចម្ដេច?
What Is the Difference Between “ម្ហូប” and “អាហារ” in Khmer?
- ម្ហូប is a native Khmer word derived from the root ហូប (to eat), with the prefix ម៑- added to it. It refers to something prepared for eating.
- អាហារ is a loanword from Pali-Sanskrit, meaning food or nourishment for satisfying hunger (Khmer Dictionary, 1967).
If we look at the meanings of these two words, they are generally similar. However, in everyday Khmer usage, they are not used in exactly the same way.
- អាហារ keeps its broader meaning of food in general — something eaten to satisfy hunger.
- ម្ហូប usually refers to dishes eaten together with rice.
For example:
ខ្ញុំញ៉ាំបាយ។
I am eating rice / I am having a meal.
In this sentence, បាយ does not only mean rice itself. In Khmer daily usage, it often implies a complete meal consisting of rice together with different dishes (ម្ហូប), such as stir-fried vegetables, herbal soup, grilled fish, and so on.
Therefore:
ខ្ញុំញ៉ាំបាយ
IPA: /kʰɲam ɲam ɓa:j/ ; /k'gnom gnam bay/
= ខ្ញុំ + ញ៉ាំ + បាយ(/អាហារ)
Here, បាយ or អាហារ can imply a full meal:
rice + dishes (ម្ហូប).
